We have two Australian terriers. They are true working dogs. They were design to kill snacks, rats and other small animals. This translates into a dog that is design to think on its own. Don’t be fooled by the small size, they are extremely smart. When Aussie are left to entertain them self, they will come up with some clever stuff. This brings on a bigger problem is once they learn something; to teach them to un-learn it is difficult. My female will push chars away from a table, and then jump on the char to get on top of the dinner table. We had a case last year where part of our fence fell down and the dogs got out. After fixing the fence, for several weeks they check out that spot in the fence.

It sounds like you have two problems. First – having a smart bored dog and second – the dog has learned something that you do not want them to know.

Is the dog getting enough people time? This breed does not do well when left alone for long periods of time.

Exercise – I use to take my dogs to dog parks when they are younger. I highly recommend Dog Parks as long as they have a separate area for small dogs. This is a fence in area where dogs would run around and play with other dogs. 60 minutes a day at that age should do it. Check you cities park services to see if one is available near you. There are web sites that list them.

Dog like to chew toys. If the dog is destroying its toys, then buy stronger toys.

Your second problem is more difficult and that is how to teach them to unlearn the stuff. Spray product like bitter apple work well on furniture. You can find them at any pet store. Some products work better than other.

If the dog is doing big time destruction, then this can be a problem. You may want to hire a trainer to come into your house and work with you. We hired a trainer with our first dog.

I am in desperate need for help with my Westie. I work long hours and can hardly afford 20 bucks per visit for someone to let Jack out for a half an hour. I don’t want to give up on having a pet, but I feel bad for him. Can anyone give me suggestions about people they know or a doggy day care with extended hours (past 6)? He is 7 months old and is showing behavior problems because of being kenneled all day. He is so lovable he just needs to get outside for walks more. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. I can spend about 30 dollars a week for help.

maybe get the dog in a day care

I have a 6month old Jack Russell puppy, and also a 5 year old Chihuahua/Dachshund Mix. Resently the puppy started to stand over the older dog when he is sitting or standing. How do I fix it, and what does it mean?? Also the puppy will randomly sit on the older dog as well. I am not sure what to do about it. Thank you for your help.

He is showing dominance over your other dog..Your puppy is tell your other dog that he’s the boss..

I’m really curious because I work at a daycare and a child was bit by the owners dog and the dog is very vicious with the children and I always thought that pets were not allowed to be in a daycare filled with children? I live in PA by the way I don’t know if it makes a difference.

I need a holiday and i’t s too late to book my cat into a Cat Boarding Kennels etc… Family members would find it difficult to manage so I want to take my cat with me on holiday what type of transport case and means of travel would prove best hurry up answer quick have to go soon.

Depends on the length of time you’re going.
My cat went on train. Halfway through the trip, I was allowed to give him water. Ask the service manager on the train. The total time he was in his cage was about 9 hours.

Put something of yours that smell like you in his cage, a toy, and a comfortable blanket. And when you get to the destination make sure that he has a litterbox and food and water.

Most pet shops have a deodorizing solution for puppy accidents that you can use to spot treat the carpet and furniture. After attending to the localized areas, sprinkle baking soda over the whole carpet and let it absorb the odor as much as possible. Vacuum carpet thoroughly. If odor remains, shampoo carpet with deodorizing shampoo. Febreeze does not work on pet odors.

hi there, im starting up a pet boarding kennel and im trying to figure out a catchy name to call it.
here are some details to maybe work with. im boarding all kinds of animals from dogs, cats, ferrets, fish, parrots, guinea pigs etc. indoor or outside.
we live on an acreage so maybe you could incorporate "acres" like "green acres" (cant use that because there is a golf course near by named that, haha)
i will also be making house calls to peoples homes or checking other peoples farms to check on horses or other livestock.
greenwater provincial park is very close by. the nearest community is porcupine plain. ( i don’t think i would go with porcupine boarding kennel) lol
our last name is hard to pronounce so i wouldn’t use that.
if anyone else has some good suggestions or ideas that would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!!!

Don’t know them, but here’s what you should know and ask…

It’s best to find someone who will care for your dog in their own home; someone who only takes a few dogs at a time. Ask your friends for recommendations – who watches their dogs? If you don’t have any friends with dogs, ask people at a dog park, pet store or obedience class. Make sure they have experience with handling dogs and know what to do in an emergency – theirs or your dogs. Do they have a fire escape plan? What happens to your dog if they have a family emergency? Are all the dogs required to be vaccinated?

If you have someone watch the dog at your house, be sure it’s a trusted friend or relative – or you may find all of your stuff ripped off when you come back. Or at least make sure they are bonded and insured and highly recommended.

No matter what you choose, be sure you have a written contract, stating the price that you are expected to pay and who is responsible for vet bills if your dog is injured or becomes ill. Make sure you get a copy of the contract as a receipt or you may have a hard time proving you left the dog with them if it disappears. Insist that they take contact phone numbers for you and someone else who is local in case of an emergency. It’s a really good idea to have your dog microchipped – in case he is lost, this is the most reliable way of getting him identified and returned home.

Boarding kennels (and vets) are not the best places to leave your healthy dog. I’ve worked in both kinds of places and I wouldn’t leave my dog there unless it was an absolute last resort (no pun intended!) Like sending your kid to school, it exposes them to many other dogs and the risk of diseases like kennel cough. Most of the time, the dogs are not walked often enough and this may ruin your housebreaking.

Anywhere you go, make sure that you are allowed to inspect the facility. If they won’t allow this, they may have something to hide. If they give you a story about insurance rules, don’t buy it. The fences should be in good repair and the place should look and smell clean. Some kennels have video hookups so that you can go online and check in on your dog whenever you want.

I am going to have a pet sitter take care of my small dog for 3 days and 2 nights. They have a choice to be in my home or thiers. What is a fair compensation?

It is not really relevant which home they are in they will still be resposible 24/7 for 3 days or so. I think it is fair to pay the same daily rate as your local boarding kennels would charge a small dog. At least he’s getting one to one attention all the time, whereas in kennels, he will only be checked on and fed and walked in line with their scheduled timetable. If you find the arrangement suits you and your dog, then it can be a good future contact.
