The Island of Hispaniola
March 52010
The island of Hispaniola was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his mission in 1492. He called the island La Espaniola. He liked the island so much that he set it up as a main base to explore the Caribbean area.
The island today is split by two countries; Haiti to the southwest and the Dominican Republic to the northeast. The Dominican Republic inhabits two thirds of the island. It also has the lions share of the populace. The Dominican Republic has about 11 million people while Haiti has less than one million people. The islands north side in the Atlantic is a very nice tourist area, temperate, and comfortable with lots of beaches to play and lay on.
